DECADE OF THE RABBIT

1 March – 1 August 2011

THE DESIRES, DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE IN THE FIRST TEN YEARS OF THE 21st CENTURY

“As White Rabbit celebrates its first decade, I’m often asked how the Collection began. On a trip to Beijing in 2001, I met up with Wang Zhiyuan, who had been my art tutor when he lived in Sydney some years before. He took me to visit some of his friends in their homes and studios. I saw none of the familiar works that I had associated with the Chinese contemporary movement and the artists I regarded as the Group. The works I saw were by artists hardly known in the West. But I had no doubt that this art deserved the respect and interest of the world.
I realised that my impression of contemporary Chinese art had been determined by a small group of artists, collectors and auction houses who dominated the conversation. The fresh, original works I saw in Beijing made a big impression on me, and I started to wonder if there might be a way to introduce these obscure greats to Australia and the world.
I phoned Wang Zhiyuan, and he too was keen. I explained that we would not try to be a star show. Instead, we would be making a document, and all the artists in the document would be presented as equals. There were already several collections of Chinese contemporary art from the 1980s to 2000. Convinced that the new century would be even more exciting, I decided to start the collection from 2001.
I wasn’t sure what to call our gallery. One morning, my glance fell on a china figurine I had bought in Beijing, of a child holding a white rabbit. I had my name! Soon after that we found a building, and after a long process of renovation we opened the gallery in August 2009.
Our artists range in age from the early twenties to the mid-sixties. Many of the younger ones have no memories and little knowledge of the hardships and suffering earlier generations endured. But young and old, all are technically skilled, boldly original, and always ready to experiment with new ideas, styles and media.
You can see the dazzling variety of their creations in our fourth exhibition, DECADE OF THE RABBIT. We hope you enjoy it—and that you’ll come back for more! “
