Feng Mengbo not only plays the combat game Quake III Arena, he has made its open-source code his main artistic tool. His Long March: Restart (2008) is a live video game that mixes elements from classic games like Super Mario Brothers and Street Fighter with imagery from Communist propaganda, allowing viewers to take the role of a Red Army soldier fighting digital enemies. In Not Too Late (2010), the artist programs a dozen bots to fight a death match, rendering them as lines and adjusting the frame refresh rate so their moves accumulate on the screen like “ink spreading on paper”. The swoops and collisions of black and white, with bursts of colour from rocket launchers, revive the spirit of calligraphy in a thrilling new arena.
