Born 1982, Xinyang, Henan. Lives and works in Beijing

When Hu Liu discovered pencil, “I gave up colour,” she says. Yet within graphite’s blacks and greys, she found colours she had never imagined. Viewers of her works have a comparable experience when they glimpse the vistas she conceals beneath layers of opacity. But light is as important to Hu Liu’s art as darkness is. In works like Grass (2015), the inner landscape seems to vanish when the pencil overlay reflects the light. When it become visibles, it’s the lightness between her lines that makes it so.
