Born 1968, Beijing
Huang Xu has spent time in Australia and held exhibitions there. He specialises in extreme close-ups of common objects, from rocks to plastic bags. Flower No. 1 (2011) is part of a series in which photographs of single blooms, in colour and monochrome, are enlarged to dozens of times their true size. The chrysanthemum, cultivated in China for 3000 years, is one of the Four Noble Plants, along with plum blossom, orchid, and bamboo. Isolated and stripped of colour, the flower becomes at once beautiful, monumental, and bizarre.
