Li Hui’s medium is electric light. It may be a product of science, but it touches the soul, he says. Elusive and intangible, it nonetheless has material qualities. His Cage (2006-14) is actually a pair of cages, twin grids made of green laser beams. When one grid appears, the other disappears. Viewers who have stepped into a cage find themselves suddenly “free”, while those who stayed outside are suddenly “trapped”. Though the bars of the cages have no substance, many viewers hesitate to cross them, avoiding them as if they were solid barriers. “This work brings out the contrast between reality and illusion,” Li Hui says.
