As an art student, Xie Molin became intrigued by the use of “non-artistic” tools for painting. After a number of experiments with mechanical means for transferring drawings to canvas, he latched onto the axial cutting plotter, which cuts out shapes in vinyl and other materials. The original designs are created as vector graphics—3D drawings in which the width, length and height of each section are scaled on X, Y and Z axes in the computer software. Xie Molin replaced the cutting bit of the machine with, variously, a pencil, a pen, a calligraphy brush, a paint extruder and a scraper.
