“Landscape painting lets me explore different levels of space. Landscape can be a type of game.”

Born Ningbo, Zhejiang, 1973

For much of his career, Xue Feng has painted landscapes. But he is the first to point out that they are not landscapes in the usual sense. Ignoring blue skies and wide-open spaces, they home in on the patterns of flowers and foliage, branches and twigs. Recreating these patterns in often-startling colour palettes, he summons atmospheric effects that range from florid abundance to dark menace. His work, he says, “emphasizes the relationship between reality and imagination. It shows the anxiety of individuals.”
